Caring for Yourself during the Holiday Rush

A message from your Doctors:
December is a wonderful time of year, but it can also be one of the most demanding. Between end-of-year deadlines, school holidays, family gatherings, and the pressure to “make it all perfect,” it’s easy for your own wellbeing to slip to the bottom of the list. As GPs, we see this every year - stress rises, sleep drops, and small health issues get ignored until they become bigger ones.
This week, we want to gently remind you that your health matters just as much as everything you’re juggling. A little care now can make the festive season far more enjoyable.
Managing Stress When Life Gets Busy
The holiday rush can leave anyone feeling stretched. If you’re noticing tension, irritability, or trouble switching off, you’re not alone. A few small habits can make a real difference:
Take short breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just a quiet moment outside.
Keep meals regular - skipping food often makes stress feel worse
Try to protect your sleep where you can
Say “no” when you need to. It’s okay to set boundaries.
If stress is starting to feel overwhelming, reach out. A conversation with your GP can help you find your strategies that suit your lifestyle.
Staying Well while travelling or hosting
Whether you’re heading away or preparing for visitors, a bit of planning goes a long way.
Make sure you have enough of your regular medications to last through public holidays.
Pack a small health kit if you’re travelling - basics like pain relief, sunscreen, and any personal essentials.
If you’re hosting, remember to pace yourself. You don’t need to do everything in one day.
Hydration , Heat and Summer Safety
December in Australia means warm weather, and dehydration can sneak up quickly - especially when you’re busy.
Keep a water bottle with you and sip regularly.
Limit alcohol on hot days, as it can increase dehydration
Take breaks in the shade when outdoors
Look out for signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, headache, nausea, or unusual fatigue
If you’re caring for children or older family members, keep an extra eye on their hydration too
A gentle reminder: You don’t need to do it all
The festive season often comes with expectations - many of them unrealistic. It’s okay if everything isn’t perfect. It’s okay if everything isn’t perfect. It’s okay if you need rest. It’s okay to slow down.
Your wellbeing is part of what makes this time meaningful. Taking care of yourself helps you show up for the people you love.
